Catchphrase – sound manipulators. RP: Vortex was a cracking party, held in a modern but nondescript white warehouse somewhere along Botany Rd. The things I remember were the two huge (2 stories tall – 80Kw apparently) speakers flanking the ground level DJ stand, the technofear lasers cutting through copious dry ice smoke for hours, and the extended version of Apotheosis' 'O Fortuna' that seemed to be the tune of the night. The cops came and shut the party down at exactly 6am (not sure of the logic of that), which forced us to the Ravers Playground recovery at Graffiti Hall of Fame, where one of my mates managed to break the gyroscope they had set up!

The 0055 number wasn't changed on Saturday evening to give the address so only about 30 people knew where it was (I knew someone working the door). This made no difference to Mr Cox who played a blinding set. It was amazing to dance for a bit then walk over to the decks and watch him do his magic as if he were in someone's lounge room.

RP: Enjoyed Midnight Madness. I remember the waterfront fun park was surrounded by a mile of white construction hoarding, which might have been a permanent fixture, but was easy to scale inconspicuously to get in free. Darling Harbour and Ultimo weren't nearly as developed then as they are now, but I don't know the promoters managed to pull this party off given the noise it would have generated without any real soundproofing. Inside most of the rides ran well into the early morning, as we spent some time on the roller coaster 📷 and bumping around on the dodgem cars during dance breaks. The dancefloor was in a large, solid framed marquee structure that was packed to capacity most of the night with ravers going mental 📷. Plenty of lights, can't remember any lasers and I think it was one of those parties where sweat dripped from the roof. Lighter piano and vocals music compared to raves later in the year. Guessing maybe a 1000 in attendance – was a bit of a blur! 📷Video: Midnight Madness.

Catchphrase – mixing technology from the very beginning to the present. I was very excited going to this rave, having read all about Sasha I was most excited about seeing him. When I arrived it was difficult to see him as he was 2km in the air. I might have saw a cigarette glow. He also didn't play his trademark house, he played breakbeat. My memory of his set is tic tac breaks, lots of bass and the occasional screaming diva. I think he came on after Pee Wee who had just played the best set of his life, so it was a big change in style. Some of the punters seemed a bit bummed. It was a large venue, podiums everywhere with a 3D laser with a dolphin going all night. It was a good night, pity I didn't get to see the great man up close. Sub Base Snarl: I was at AZTEC one (the one at homebush) the one that had the TechnoFear laser doing its thing? It looked amazing! The things I remember about it were the vast number of colours - as typically up to that point lasers I had seen were green or red, or had different beams with their own fixed colours - this was FULL RGB, with colours morphing and changing constantly - pastels, browns, all sorts of colours I'd not really seen before 'in light'. And different to the way many club lasers are usually presented - there was no fog to speak of, which makes the laser 'beams' coming out from the laser itself visible - this was all about where the beams hit the almost invisible, see-through mesh screen/scrim - this made the shapes the laser was drawing appear to 'hang in space' in the middle of the room - and they were often drawing things meant to look like 3D shapes - rotating cubes etc - which looked quite convincing given the light shapes were just hanging in space - not being drawn onto a flat wall. Don't remember anything about the music or who played! LOL.webp)

Easter Sunday. HC: Story time! My first rave - 2000AD, 19 April 1992. Became a Porters Paints and now surrounded by 1000 units, but I digress. I was 21 lived out past Windsor. My bestie Tracy M convinced me to go. At the time, I didn't dabble, so the plan was, she would drive my car to the city and I would drink on the way and by morning I'd be sober enough to drive home. Halfway to the city, we got into a little car accident with a little red corvette (owner - CEO of Kettle chips 😬) we finally got to the venue and I thought, fuck it! lll have a go... and I did... and 'it was the best night' 🤣 I think I told hundreds of people about our accident. It was the start of a glorious few years of great stories, music and friends. We soon ditched the long drive each weekend and moved to Darlinghurst. Forever memories. Can't wait till my boys are older and I can tell them my stories

Inside – big sound, lots of lighting and lasers buzzing constantly over the crowd zapping the Mixed Beans logo (amongst other designs) onto a giant overhead projection sheet. There were big podiums on either side of the elevated DJ stand (I spent most of the night on the one to the left hand side which were great to look out over the sea of raving faces from. The party was one of the last of an era in some ways. It was pretty big – probably 2000+ in attendance – and there was an interesting mix of ravers (including a sizeable gay contingent) that wasn't really seen that wasn't really seen as much after Mixed Beans. All up a great party with an awesome vibe!Video: Mixed Beans

NG: Did the party “Wayne's World” really happen in 1992? With 3 warehouse spaces (one with techno, one with soul/reggae DJs, one with live bands like Tina Harrod, Skunkhour and D.I.G.??? Oh, and a bbq with “lambs on a spit, sausages and salad” ER: It kicked off but only about 100 people showed up - it was in a double warehouse at the Welcome 92 venue - me and Kaveh and a few others stayed till approx 2am and then went home - Wayne ended up in big debt and fled to the Adelaide Hills - he'd be mid 70's now if still alive LP: It was shut down/cancelled the night of the event. Wayne *the Wizard* lost a bunch of money and was in tears the next day at the Cricketer's, a shattered man. Allegedly the money for the party was supplied by some nefarious characters and Wayne had to go into hiding not long after. Please note, apart from seeing Wayne on the day after, the rest of what I wrote here was what was told to me around that time and may be total bullshit. CM: Is Wayne still around? Catchphrase – Let the warriors dance. RP: This first party from the Tribal crew was a turning point for the scene to one that focused on hard, speed-driven industrial music. The party itself was held in two abandoned, condemned and very dirty warehouses near the airport, with all sorts of hazards indoors and out (holes in floors, lumps of concrete and metal to trip over, gantries to climb and dance on), but it was freakin' awesome – with belting music playing well into the morning hours in two rooms. I believe there was a large bonfire outside outside in the wasteland between the fence and the warehouses, and the sun shining through grimy windows of the softer room in the morning was magic. Can't remember any lasers and there was only simple lighting. At a guess one – two thousand punters in attendance. We had to clean brown gunge from ears and nostrils afterwards as the venue was so industrial. Excellent!

Car park on Elizabeth St. It's gone now, it had graffiti all over it. Was such a cool inner city venue. The police actually came and closed this party, but after they found they did not have a warrant to enter it, the party started it again.

BB: My first ever Outdoor experience & it was held in a huge circus tent. 📷 📷 📷. DZ: Ecology…sick party. BW: Remember a really cool chillout area maybe punos? with all these plants & waterfally things. And after that for a hour or so everyone was wearing super hero outfits. You get that.. Anon: Two of the guys I went with actually took a chess board in with them & set it up on one of the back podiums & played chess for hours by torchlight! Even stranger was one of them had his pet spider in a big glass jar next to him while he was playing. I couldn't stop laughing every time some punter would wander over for a look & saw what they were doing hehe. Pacific Park Venue: Pacific Park..webp)

For those of you who were lucky enough to go to an event held here you know what I mean when I say mind blowing venue!!! They had animation (from memory sonic the hedgehog) across a huge wall in one section & even a guy dressed up as Elvis & singing his songs in another! It was the biggest trip ever. Still to this day when I drive over the Glebe Island bridge I can't believe I went to an illegal rave there. SPINOUT. (Thirteen) Ov the Earth Tribe the first party at the Silo's was nothing short of amazing. Where you walked in upstairs it was the house room, then you walked to this staircase that took you down into this black plastic maze. Took a friend and i a while to navigate through it. Then downstairs there was the hardcore room****and a chillout. You could pretty much wander around the whole place all night. They had a room filled with bean bag balls all over the floor and was lit up by fluro light. Seeing as this was the only lit room in the place it made every time you went in there so bright. They had a huge projection of Sonic the Hedgehog on a wall as you walked in.The production as far as the theme went was pretty awesome. Some friends rocked up who were going to another party and we begged them to go in to check it out. They were so glad they did. I saw people doing some really risky stuff that night. How people never got hurt at some these parties i will never know. I've often wondered if you could legally do a part there. It is the most amazing space for a party. RP-(I remember the massive Sonic projection very well), however adding that I heard from one of the Tribal team the morning after that all they needed to do was pay off a single security guard to get access to this awesome venue. Bizarre looking up at its massive structure at 9am on a sunny Sunday morning…

It had a really great set up 📷, awesome DJs & the music was loud as. Unfortunately the night didn't go as was planned. Due to the location of the event the music carried over the cliffs to the homes below & the cops turned up. The first time they did the music was turned off only to then be turned back on when they left. Obviously they returned to completely close down the event. I found out about the devastating news of the fatal car crash the next day along with my parents who when reading the article in the paper & then later seeing it on the news asked if I knew that people took drugs there. My answer was of course I didn't. (Thirteen) $30 + booking fee.Video: Full Video, Ming D, 6 Min Highlights.
