Apocalypse and Armageddon were both put on by Tribal Productions for the Australia Day Long Weekend. It was 1 Ticket = 2 Parties. Polanski: One of the most mind blowing raves I went to. There were a stack of speakers as tall as the roof in the shape of a pyramid when you first walked in. I can't remember it being a huge venue. I don't know who the first DJ was, but he forgot his headphones and as a result, his mixing was a wee bit dodgy. The DJs were not elevated for once, they were right there on the dance floor. I was a very keen DJ trainspotter and I just remember that I was able to stand directly in front of Carl Cox for his whole set on 3 decks and watching him mix, it was incredible, not to just hear him but too watch his every move was incredible. He was going crazy on 3 decks, scratching and cutting and he knocked the needle off the record and everyone cheered. He just smiled and got on with it. The lights and overall effort by the promoter was shit, but the fact the promoter couldn't be bothered to elevate the DJ made it an unforgettable party. The fact that Carl Cox also performed live made it a fantastic party.Video: Tribal Armageddon

Carl Cox was in town and came to have a look and said 'Thats the biggest baddest sound system I have ever seen'. The cops came to close it but could not find anyone who was running it so they pulled the mains power to the whole warehouse. No one wanted to go and when they told us to leave someone pegged a water bottle at one of them on stage.

I went out to this one in Sydney, when we heard the venue was the warehouse that had been used for Tribal 1 in July 92 we were very excited. We got out there at 11pm and the cops were talking to Nick TT and Vagas and telling all the ravers that were rocking up to leave and that the event wasn't going to happen.

Clip from the ABC documentary Growing Up Fast, this clip takes us to the 'Carnival Ov Thee Mind' inner city rave in a disused railway yard, Eveleigh Railyards in Sydney's Redfern. Awesome party and location, but was shut down at around 2am. The promoters had signs at the entrances saying βExtras enter hereβ or something along that line, to make it look like the rave was a film set. The party was unbelievable; you had to walk through the maze of train carriages to get to the different rooms. π₯ The main room was huge, and Meat Beat Manifesto played that night. They entered with each member carrying a 40 gallon drum and beating it with a stick. They were all in balaclavas, and once out the front, they stood on their gallon drums and then proceeded to light a flare each. Their set was awesome. The chillout was called βThe haunted fishtankβ and had heaps of decorations attached to string hanging from the ceiling. Heaps of people in fluro were dancing in there whilst bouncing on exercise trampolines! SR: cracking party! the upside down tables in the chill space π Mookie: Those drums of fire, dogdy holes everywhere and the entrance through trains carriages all added to a deliciously dangerous rave adventure! π€© CL: OMG what a memorable event of our time! That night was sooooo much fun! You'd never do that these days as it would be considered dangerous and a fire trap. Absolutely monged in the train talking shit then running out to dance πβοΈ π·.Video: ABC Documentary Growing Up Fast

I think we used a different entrance as well! We had to move there at the last minute since the original venue next to McDonald's on George St was chained and locked due to some dodgy issue, and someone had broken in a bit before and stolen some of Guy's/Aladdin Sound's Cerwin Vegas! The party went on and was good though, I think around 1000 people plus or minus, our biggest at that time at least. My only other memory of that was walking up and down Harris St outside the venue trying to manage noise complaints so we could stay open (we did), and playing Feel So Real by Dream Frequency in the morning.

DJ Edge (UK), Nik Fish, John Ferris, Pee Wee, Tru Story, Crisis, Paul Holden, Quest, Brett Beetroot, Ming DDescription:
Was a wicked party, just behind Darling Harbour the venue was great. Couldn't hear much from outside. A series of mazey hallways lead to the underground carpark. Heaps of people and DJ Edge going off. Promoter: Hard to believe that it's close to the 30th anniversary of Freedom 2...good time for another thanks, credit to the Bliss / Bulbe / Punos(KISS, remember?) crews, Dave C., Meyer, and others for making everything come together smoothly, and look and sound great! The local DJ's all did a super top job getting into the spirit of the night (as always), and DJ Edge/Gordon Matthewman was amazing...back then there were no demos or youtube so we weren't sure exactly what we'd get on the night (trumpet you say, cool idea let's do it), and so we were all experiencing it for the first time. I recall Edge hung around in Sydney for a while afterwards and was in no hurry to leave. Cool guy, he must have left eventually since he was kind enough to show me around some clubs in London early the following year, and to visit the late Colin Faver at Kiss FM. There were close to 2000 people at the party from memory (hard to say exactly since the guest list was a pretty fluid concept, and loads of people were in the chillout and spread all around the space and outside), but the intimacy of this photo π· reminds me how we, on purpose, never put the DJ on a stage or podium... It would have been hard there anyway because of the low roof of the car park, but the idea was DJ and crowd as one on the same level, people reaching over touching the turntables (pitched up to +12 or 16) and all, I'm sure it made everyone give that little bit extra...and those lasers were RIGHT THERE! Same homemade spirit as the first pub parties, earlier that same year, but on a much bigger scale. I have one or two more pics somewhere, but the video footage shot by Paul aka Dougie is lost in the mists of time unfortunately...
